Giants won’t pick up Ereck Flowers’ option

Of all the option decisions for the 2015 first-rounders, this one is probably the most #asexpected.

A league source confirms to PFT that the Giants will not be picking up the fifth-year option on tackle Ereck Flowers.

The indictment remained an untold part of Patricia’s past during his rise in the coaching ranks, and the Lions said it eluded them during a background check that only searched for criminal convictions.

When approached by The Detroit News, team president Rod Wood initially saidI don’t know anything about this — but hours later said his review of the situation only reinforced the team’s decision to hire Patricia.

I am very comfortable with the process of interviewing and employing Matt, Wood said.

When guys are messing up, guys are going back and getting seconds. It has that 2014 feel where guys are flying all over the field and want to be good and want to be successful.”

Going back to 2014 would be good for the Broncos. Going back to 2015 would be even better; that’s when they won the Super Bowl.

Veteran defensive end Adrian Clayborn is coming off a career year in which he put up 9.5 sacks while forcing two fumbles despite starting just two games and playing only 52.9 percent of the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive snaps. Clayborn was a first-round pick seven years ago, and he’s still only 29 years old.

Clayborn ended the 2017 campaign with 54 total quarterback pressures and a pass-rush productivity of 10.9, which were good for 16th and 10th, respectively, among 68 4-3 defensive ends with at least 135 pass-rushing snaps, Chichester wrote. broncos_077_83d4e9b0c4588455-180x180

Matt Millen battling rare illness, will likely need a heart transplant

Matt Millen, a well-known figure to football fans for his decades as a player, broadcaster and former General Manager of the Lions, is dealing with a rare and serious illness.

Despite some receiving flexibility, Charles Sims drew little interest in free agency and so he’s back on a small one-year prove-it deal.

It’ll be hard to prove anything with second-round rookie Ronald Jones and undrafted 2016 breakout contributor Peyton Barber getting most of his reps.

The rest of this draft was nondescript, though Kevin Pamphile has toggled between the top of the bench and bottom of the starting lineup.

But on Tuesday, Severino made Boston look like every other opponent .

Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie said before the draft that he and Gruden are on the same page about what kinds of players they want to draft. That’s good for McKenzie, because if the two of them couldn’t agree, it would be Gruden who would make the call.

The simple reality of the Raiders is that they have a new coach who negotiated a 10-year, $100 million contract directly with the owner. That means the coach is the person in the building with the most authority. And he’ll have the authority to put together a personnel staff as he sees fit.

Since getting released on April 13, Bryant’s been seriously linked to only one team, the Baltimore Ravens. According to ex-ESPN reporter Ed Werder, Bryant actually rejected a multi-year offer from the Ravens because he wants to play under a one-year deal, which would give him a chance to hit free agency at the beginning of next offseason. The Ravens then went out and signed Willie Snead away from the Ravens, thus ending their pursuit of Bryant.

Charleston billionaire Ben Navarro has reached out to two-time Super Bowl winner Peyton Manning about joining his ownership group that is bidding on the Carolina Panthers, according to two sources with knowledge of the discussions.broncos_007_f2b3860642a09f78-180x180

2018 NFL Draft Day 3 Live Reaction

Looking for the best NFL draft coverage around? Bleacher Report is the go-to destination for armchair quarterbacks everywhere that are looking for full results and picks from the 2018 NFL draft.

Watch as Bleacher Report Lead NFL Draft Analyst Matt Miller and his Stick to Football podcast co-host Connor Rogers give live scouting reports for Day 3 of the 2018 NFL draft.

Almost every poll taken over years shows public revulsion over what people see as the outsize and corrosive influence of money in politics. Through one change in campaign finance laws after another, public cynicism toward money in politics has hardly moved in a positive direction. People know how much time and effort candidates spend raising money, and many believe that the transactions involve some kind of quid pro quo that is to the detriment of the common good, whether true or not.

During the campaign, Trump bragged about how he exploited the campaign finance system. He said he gave money to political candidates to buy access. When he came calling, he said with typical Trumpian flourish, the politicians would kiss his backside to try to help him. I alone can fix, he also claimed, what he said was wrong with Washington.

I plead the Fifth, Brady said at the Milken Institute Global Conference. Man, that is a tough question. Yeah, I mean, they appreciate…I think everybody in general wants to be appreciated more at work.

Brady added that Belichick is not only the best coach in the history of the NFL but also the best for me because Belichick maximizes talent.

There’s no people I’d rather play for or be committed to than the team that I’ve been with for a long time, Brady said.

Driven and unselfish are best adjectives for Eagles deep cast of receivers

Proving there’s more than one way to build an NFL champion, the Philadelphia Eagles won it all last season without a 1,000-yard rusher or 1,000-yard receiver and without their starting quarterback on top of all that.

But in keeping the same philosophy after losing Carson Wentz of distributing the football more evenly than most of their peers, they were able to succeed well beyond reasonable expectations.

What’s more, they did it without complaint.

Allen Park — Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn played it coy heading into the 2018 NFL Draft, saying he felt his team had enough running backs to be competitive. But Quinn clearly felt the need to add another option from the deep pool of talented prospects at the top of this year’s class.

Hybrid safety. Needs to get stronger and better at defeating blocks. 116. Dorance Armstrong Jr., DE, Kansas Grade: B- Nice size and length. Flashes of bend, but not consistent with his hands. Fair amount of power. 117. Jordan Whitehead, SS, Pittsburgh Grade: B+ Short and small. Speed. Surprising pop. Solid range. Tons of needed investment in secondary, which is what TB needed.

Anthony Averett, CB, Alabama Grade: B- Lanky. Limited strength. Supreme speed. Lacks hip fluidity. 119. Kyzir White, FS, West Virginia Grade: B Bradley gets more speed for this defense. White better at LB than S. Downhill run thumper. 120. Will Dissly, TE, Washington Grade: D Way too early. Some blocking prowess but not a true people-mover. Not a separation TE and lacks speed. 121. Taron Johnson, CB, Weber State Grade: C+ CB is sneaky need for the Bills, but where’s the WR? Johnson was ultra productive at FCS level. Grabby at times. 122. Kenny Young, ILB, UCLA Grade: A- Has speed issues but reacts quickly, sheds blocks, and thumps against the run. Nice depth add. tigers_004-115x115

Aaron Rodgers has 30 million reasons to talk extension

OK, Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. There’s no reason to wait anymore.

Jimmy Garoppolo got $27.5 million per year in February.

Kirk Cousins got $28 million a year in March.

It’s time for Rodgers to top them all.

Trump’s vast outlay of cash, tracked through public records and totaled publicly here for the first time, provides a new window into the president’s private company, which discloses few details about its finances.

It shows that Trump had access to far more cash than previously known, despite his string of commercial bankruptcies and the Great Recession’s hammering of the real estate industry.

Why did the King of Debt, as he has called himself in interviews, turn away from that strategy, defying the real estate wisdom that it’s unwise to risk so much of one’s own money in a few projects?

The new eyes belong to Giants offensive coordinator Mike Shula and tight ends coach Lunda Wells, who is new to the position after playing and coaching offensive line. The playbook looks familiar, however.

Pat is calling the plays, so it’s very similar, Carter said. He has changed some things up, some words around, some plays around. This is his baby now.

The Vikings boasted one of the best offenses in the NFL last season, with receivers Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, tight end Kyle Rudolph, and running backs Dalvin Cook, Jeremiah McKinnon and Latavius Murray.

In Minnesota, we had a lot of talent. I feel like the receivers and tight ends here can do the same things, Carter said. Like he did in Minnesota, there is a lot of multiple tight ends and multiple formations to keep people on their toes.

If Carter has an upper hand, he isn’t banking on it.

Griffin’s tale is an incredible one, as the linebacker with one hand has seen his story sweep the globe since the Seahawks made the pick. Expectations will likely keep ballooning given the hype, but the Seahawks themselves simply expect a linebacker with superb speed to consistently be around the ball and offer some quality blitzing in sub-packages.

The guy with the biggest impact on the Seahawks this year is going to be Penny, even if he’s seeing some of the spotlight shine elsewhere.

Sam Darnold wants to begin overcoming this hurdle at Jets’ rookie minicamp

Sam Darnold hopped on the bus at 6:45 a.m. Friday and headed from his hotel to the Jets’ training facility, eager to start his NFL career.

Darnold knows he won’t get it all done at once this weekend, at the Jets’ rookie minicamp. He knows this is a process for him, going from third overall draft pick to potential franchise quarterback savior for this success-starved franchise.

But as Darnold approaches rookie minicamp and its three practices from Friday through Sunday there are a couple things in particular he wants to accomplish.

Kylie Fitts, OLB, Utah: The Broncos can continue the Ute movement they had with Bolles to get a pass rusher to match that pass protector. Fitts would be a good complement to Miller with his versatility, speed, quickness and ranginess. He is good at pursuing QBs, both inside and outside the pocket. Fitts is not the best power defender, but he could help as a situational sack artist at first before getting a little stronger in the NFL.The agility and athleticism stand out for a fourth- or fifth-round pick.

Elway needs to come through with a home-run class with starting-caliber talent over several rounds, not just the first. There’s transition in the division with the Chiefs breaking in a new QB, the Raiders bringing back Jon Gruden and the Chargers surging. The Broncos need to accept the fact that they need to be more of a rebuilder than a reloader, keeping it in mind through all five rounds.

Appearing on 93.7 the Fan Pittsburgh on Friday, Roethlisberger was pointed when asked about last week’s selection of Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph with the 76th overall pick.

Veteran linebacker Akeem Ayers, who finished the 2017 season with the Giants, has been suspended for the first four weeks of the season, a league source tells Field Yates of (on Twitter). The reason for the suspension is not yet known.

Ayers finished out the 2016 season with 18 tackles, two sacks, and one interception for the Colts. He graded out as the No. 54 edge defender in the NFL out of 110 qualified players in that season, per Pro Football Focus’ metrics. Last year, he dressed for six games for the G-Men and registered one tackle.

It’s not going to be something that separates the locker room, he said Friday on the first day of rookie minicamp. We’re not going to be fighting over who’s the man in the locker room. I’m a team-oriented guy and I just want to win.giants_148

Roethlisberger ‘surprised’ Steelers drafted Rudolph

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was surprised the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted a quarterback months after he notified them about his plan to play three-to-five more years.

Mayfield, the draft’s No. 1 pick, was forewarned by coach Hue Jackson that Taylor is the starting quarterback this season, and he’s not fighting it.

It’s not about individuals, said Mayfield. They brought him and I in because we’re both team-oriented guys. He’s the starter, and all I can do is help us out. So when you get a guy like that that helps out a locker room in just the best way possible, he’s a grinder. He comes in early. He’s the last one to leave, and I can only aspire to be like that.

After walking on at Texas Tech and Oklahoma and winning the starting job at both schools, Mayfield isn’t one to take sitting lightly. But he made the most of it when he sat out his first season at Oklahoma because of transfer rules.

For one, he needs to get more comfortable with calling pre-snap audibles at the line of scrimmage. It was something he rarely did at USC. Darnold said getting used to that is a goal for him this weekend, as he gets back on the practice field for the first time since late December.

The Broncos have three picks from No. 40 to No. 99. That’s the sweet spot of getting value in this draft without reaching.

If they can’t or don’t get Barkley early, Georgia’s downhill-styled Nick Chubb should be the top running back target. This also is a good range to dive into a wideout or tight end. Clemson’s Deon Cain and LSU’s D.J. Chark would be good, big bodies to go after at the former position, with Penn State’s Mike Gesicki and Oklahoma’s Mark Andrews standing out at the latter position.

It’s also likely Denver will address its offensive line here. Although guard will be in play, the good tackle values in the second and third rounds include Western Michigan’s Chukwuma Okorafor and Oregon’s Tyrell Crosby. All this sets up a defensive-heavy final day.nike_jets_1637

Philip Rivers Discusses Chargers Possibly Taking QB in 2018 NFL Draft

Philip Rivers is 36 years old and understands he won’t be the quarterback of the Los Angeles Chargers forever.

With the 2018 NFL draft approaching later this month, Rivers addressed the possibility of his team selecting another signal-caller.

To tell you the truth, I don’t know why. I did ask, but I didn’t get any answers. —Former Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola, now a Dolphin, to Mike Reiss of ESPN. com , on the absence of Malcolm Butler in the 41-33 Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia.

Can a player come closer than Amendola just did to saying, What the hell was Bill Belichick doing that night? I don’t think so. Dez Bryant Stats of the Week Lots of hubbub about the Dallas Cowboys’ release of wide receiver Dez Bryant, who will be 30 years old this year and hasn’t been worth the big money he’s been making since he signed a huge contact in early 2015. A few points, numerically, back up my question about the Bryant cutting: What took the Cowboys so long? I Rishard Matthews has been a more productive NFL player over the past three years than Dez Bryant.

The news comes shortly after there was controversy between the Seahawks and Kaepernick. The former 49ers quarterback was invited to work out in Seattle, but the team decided to hold off on the visit when Kaepernick would not promise to stop kneeling during the national anthem, per multiple reports.

The timing of Morris’ signing with the Seahawks sparked only more controversy as Kaepernick, who hasn’t played since the 2016 season, tries to navigate finding a spot in the NFL after drawing attention with his social activism and protests.

It didn’t take long for Eagles defensive lineman Chris Long to share his criticism of what was happening in Seattle, saying Kaepernick is getting blackballed. Long has been one of the more vocal players to express support for those who chose to kneel during the national anthem.

So let me get this straight: SEA scheduled a workout w Kaep and 2 weeks later, cancels it on the grounds of social activism knowing full well what the fall out would be?dolphins_083

Dez Bryant wants to play in NFC East: ‘It’s personal’

Dez Bryant doesn’t want to leave the NFC East after being released by the Cowboys Friday. He wants to take on Dallas as often as he can.

“Being in the division is a huge possibility, it’s something that I want,” Bryant told NFL Network. “It’s personal.”

Bryant repeatedly said during the offseason that he wanted to play for the Cowboys. He also said he didn’t want to take a pay cut, but wasn’t quite as strong expressing that point of view.

Kyle Rudolph continues to produce and has two years left on his contract, but he also is coming off ankle surgery and turns 29 in November. Minnesota lacks another athletic pass-catching option behind him, and new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo saw what the Zach Ertz-Trey Burton combination did for Philadelphia last season. Kirk Cousins already is loaded with targets on his new team, but in Washington, he thrived most when two tight ends (Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis) were key threats.

There’s some anticipation building that the Patriots, especially after the Cooks deal, might pull off another shocker and go after Odell Beckham Jr. But the extra first-rounder allows them to land Tom Brady’s successor however they want, even over QB-needy rivals like the Jets and Bills, if necessary. For now, if New England stays at this pick, Rudolph is an ideal prospect.

Moore has been getting more buzz as a first-round pick, and there’s a chance his stock rises even higher. Moore could help Philadelphia replace Torrey Smith with his ability to make big plays both before and after the catch.

We’re not prepared to be that specific, so here are 10 players, based on team needs, who we believe are first-round fits for the Lions.

Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan: After being held out of the combine due to an irregular EKG, it looks as if the interior lineman has been cleared of those concerns. Lean and explosive, he was one of the nation’s most consistent pass rushers from the inside last season and could provide the Lions with a much-needed boost in that area.

Derrius Guice, RB, LSU: If the Lions are going to take a running back in the first round, Guice is the most logical option. A violent runner with plus speed and good balance, he could round out the team’s current backfield rotation while providing a long-term replacement for LeGarrette Blount, who is operating on a one-year deal.dolphins_105

Redskins schedule 2018: Washington to host string of playoff contenders

The Redskins’ 2018 schedule is loaded with intriguing matchups against teams from the NFC South and AFC South in addition to Washington’s NFC East rivals.

For Washington to compete for a spot in the NFC playoffs this season, they’ll need to navigate a schedule full of strong contenders. The good news for the Redskins: Several of those contenders will have to travel to Washington.

Biggest breaks: Some of Washington’s toughest opponents in Atlanta, Carolina, Green Bay and Houston have to travel to FedEx Field, which should help. The Redskins also have just one long trip out west on their hands — the game in Arizona.

Bottom line: Washington appears to have a middle-of-the-road schedule. It could be tougher, and it could be easier. As if the competition in the NFC East wasn’t strong enough, the division being matched up against the NFC South, which some consider the best division in football, makes life harder on Washington and its rivals. The Redskins could see a gloomy projection for their own season and think about what the Eagles were able to accomplish last year given a similar outlook. The problem is Washington doesn’t have the same level of talent on its roster. Record prediction: 6-10

With that in mind, Sporting News breaks down the Steelers’ 2018 NFL Draft outlook, including needs, first-round possibilities, Day 2 and Day 3 plans and a few sleepers.

Linebacker: Ryan Shazier’s injury left a huge void in the Steelers’ defense last season. Pittsburgh allowed 28 points per game in five games after Shazier’s injury, and that included the 45-42 loss to the Jaguars in the playoffs. The Steelers love their linebackers, and there are good ones available in this class.

Quarterback: Roethlisberger is 36, and while retirement talks have not yet reached the Favre-like hysteria, they’re close though. It doesn’t hurt to have a quarterback of the future waiting, and there are good options that should be available.

Running back: Just in case the Bell situation reaches a worst-case scenario, it doesn’t hurt to have a backup plan. This draft is flush with middle-round running backs who could fulfill that need.dolphins_016
