Star John Tavares tells Islanders he’s leaving

The day New York Islanders fans hoped would never come has arrived. Franchise center John Tavares has told the Isles that he will be signing with another team, according to multiple reports.

The Athletic was first to report the news.

The basketball-first arena has had ice issues and sightline problems for hockey, however, and the Islanders announced they are building their own arena at Belmont Park. Until it is done in 2021, the team will be splitting time between Barclays and a refurbished Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders had been hoping that Tavares would remain to be the star on their new stage.

Tavares is coming off a six-year, $33 million contract.

Strikeouts had topped hits in a full month for the first time in April, when then there were 6,656 strikeouts and 6,360 hits. The previous low differential was in April 2017, when there were 138 more hits than strikeouts.

There were 7,033 hits and 6,971 strikeouts in May.

Strikeouts per game averaged 16.9 in June, up from 16.75 in May but down from 17.5 in April, which was a record for a full calendar month. Strikeouts have set a record for 10 consecutive seasons, and this year’s rate projects to 41,464. That would shatter last year’s mark of 40,104; the total was 32,884 in 2008.

There have been 2,822 home runs in 1,236 games, an average of 2.26. That represents a drop from 2.52 last year through June, when there were 3,024 in 1,199 games.

Aaron Donald named PFF’s No. 1 player in the NFL for 2018

Aaron Donald named PFF’s No. 1 player in the NFL for 2018 More Aaron Donald put together one of the most impressive seasons by an interior defender in NFL history last year, and that’s not an exaggeration. Consider this: He missed all of OTAs, all of training camp and the first week of the season. He transitioned from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense without practicing once in camp with the team. Add in the fact that he also sat out Week 17 with the rest of the Rams’ starters and still went on to win Defensive Player of the Year.

Shannon Sharpe, the Hall of Fame tight end (who is quick to lobby that his big brother, Sterling, deserves a gold jacket), was so passionate Friday on his FS1 show while reacting to the Owens saga. Sharpe, like so many others, is at a loss to understand Owens’ decision. He used sheer numbers to put the honor into context, pointing out that more than 25,000 players have played in a game during the NFL’s 98-year history. Including the new class, there are just 310 Hall of Famers, including coaches, owners and other contributors.

Dylan Covey (R), 20 percent, Chicago White Sox vs. Oakland Athletics: Covey quietly has been fantasy-relevant over the past month. The right-hander sports a 2.36 ERA and 8.4 K/9 over his past six outings, allowing two or fewer earned runs in all but one start. The key to his success has been keeping the ball on the ground (60 percent ground ball rate) and in the yard (0.22 HR/9). Covey’s skill set doesn’t necessarily match up with a sub-3.00 ERA, but he should be able to hold down an A’s team that sports an 87 wRC+ over the past 30 days.

Jaime Barria (R), rostered in 20 percent of ESPN leagues, Los Angeles Angels vs. Toronto Blue Jays: Barria was roughed up a bit his last time out (6 ER in 4 IP against Arizona). Prior to that, however, he’d held a 2.61 ERA over his previous eight starts. While Barria is not a big swing-and-miss guy (7.4 K/9), he has good control (2.0 BB/9) and a favorable home park that suppresses both runs and homers. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are not a team to fear. They’ve been league average against righty pitching this season with a 23.5 percent whiff rate.

Modest N.J. home of longtime Giants GM now listed for under $500K

The home of former New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese went on the market in mid-April for $549,999, but after another slashing of the listing price, the Morris County home is now listed for under $500,000.

Reese bought the home with his wife, Gwen, for $257,500 in 1999, right in the middle of his rise through the organization from a college scout, starting in 1994, to when he was named the team’s general manager, in 2007. In total, Reese worked 23 years for the Giants, helping assemble two Super Bowl-winning teams.

After a 2-10 start in 2017, the Giants fired Reese and head coach Ben McAdoo, who is also selling his New Jersey home.

Houston’s Carlos Correa (458,367) surpassed Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor (420,674) and Didi Gregorius of the Yankees (413,135) in pursuit of Machado at shortstop, and 2017 NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton (478,872), now of the Yankees, continues to trail Martinez at designated hitter.

More NFL news Carson Wentz throwing well at Eagles minicamp, but not yet cleared for full activity According to Tim McManus of ESPN, Cullen got a call from the team about being fitted for a ring and said it must be an error, since she hadn’t worked for the team since Kelly’s second season, when the coach fired her despite Cullen having been with the Eagles since 1985, having worked for a ridiculous seven different head coaches.

No, it’s not an error, a team employee told Cullen when she replied with confusion. Call me. We need to get you fitted. Report: Baker Mayfield not ready to compete with Tyrod Taylor

A year after the Browns thrust then-rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer into a Week One starting role, the Browns appear intent to do the opposite, keeping quarterback Baker Mayfield on ice for as long as possible.

If that’s the plan, Mayfield is making it easier to implement. Here’s an assessment of the competition, if there is one, between Mayfield and Tyrod Taylor, from Dan Labbe of the Cleveland Plain Dealer: This is where I tell you that, based on the six practices of OTAs and minicamp that were open to the media, Mayfield did not look ready to compete with Taylor for the No. 1 quarterback job.

Already, those on the scene see a difference.

They’re a lot closer than they were last year, Ellison said of the offensive line. They want to be a unit and they want to be around each other, so that’s pretty cool to see.

As for Flowers, Ellison said, I like him at right tackle. He’s a strong dude, he’s an athletic dude.

The interaction between Titans players and our officers was exceptional, Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson said. The conversations were relaxed, and it was clear that both groups had a good time being with each other. This was an outstanding idea by Jon Robinson and I am grateful that he brought it to us.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel said there was no connection between the event and NFL players’ protests against police shootings.

I think this is about us being with the police officers in our community and gun safety. I think there was a lot of things that you can accomplish. Just like when we go out on the practice field, Vrabel said.

Thursday represented the Titans’ last day of work before training camp opens in late July.

I know everybody’s name. I couldn’t say that before. I’ve talked to everybody in this locker room, and we all talk amongst each other. We all mesh well. That’s gonna pay dividends on game day.

A team on the rise?

Very, very on the rise, and you’ll just have to see, Lee said.

Colts claim Zach Pascal off waivers from Tennessee

The Colts claimed receiver Zach Pascal off waivers from Tennessee. They waived receiver Kayaune Ross in a corresponding move.

Pascal spent time on the Titans’ active roster and practice squad as a rookie in 2017 but did not see game action. He participated in Washington’s 2017 offseason program and training camp as an undrafted free agent before being waived during final cuts on September 2.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday had a heated exchange with a reporter who flatly told her that NFL players who kneel during the national anthem were not disrespecting the flag — despite President Trump’s insistence that they were.

Is the president aware it’s not about disrespecting the flag? American Urban Radio’s April Ryan asked Sanders, even though she had called on another reporter during a press briefing.

When Sanders tried to shut her off, the room grew unusually tense as Ryan, an African-American, doggedly persisted and other reporters gave her space, declining to interrupt.

Another scheduling conflict will keep the Jets from staging their annual Green and White scrimmage at MetLife Stadium. Instead, the scrimmage will move to Rutgers University.

The limited access comes during a year when many fans will want to see rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. For the most part, they’ll have to wait for the preseason and, if/when he ends up being the starter, the regular season.

You can discipline them, Bowles said. You can suspend them. If a person wants to drink, I’ve realized that in life they’re going to drink. This is not to say anything about Chris, that he’s doing that but you can try to discipline them and you go accordingly. It’s not like all of us sitting in here hasn’t made a mistake in life. I, for one, have. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m without sin.

Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins on Tuesday accused the White House of being caught in a lie after its depiction of him and his teammates in Monday’s statement canceling the Super Bowl champs’ visit with President Trump over the continuing national-anthem controversy.

N.J. lawmakers ignore leagues’ pleas over sports betting

Murphy spokesman Dan Bryan said in a statement the governor has long been supportive of New Jersey’s right to allow sports betting and he wants to ensure that the proposed regulatory scheme is fair and reasonable.

A source familiar with the situation said Murphy is not expected to sign the bill this week.

Johnson became Patient Zero for a precedent that faced increased scrutiny when the Cowboys ‘ Dez Bryant and the Steelers ‘ Jesse James — among others — had big plays overturned in high-profile, nationally televised games. In an effort to simplify a rule that had grown downright labyrinthine, league owners voted unanimously this offseason to remove the going to the ground portion of the process.

What Beckham will be doing at next week’s practices remains to be seen, however. Shurmur said on Monday, via multiple reporters, that it is possible that Beckham will receive medical clearance for team work by that point. Beckham has been limited to individual drills when he has been at practices this offseason as he works his way back from last year’s fractured ankle.

Jackson worked off the bench for the most part and wound up seeing action on 60 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. He limited receivers to a 34.9 percent catch rate and 151 yards in that work, which made his play better known to those in the analytics community than to the general public.

Owens’ two-year stint with the Eagles came to an end after his relationship with McNabb soured, and he went through a bitter contract dispute with the front office before signing with the Dallas Cowboys, where he played three seasons.

Technological advances have provided networks with high-definition, frame-by-frame replays dissected Zapruder-style and interpreted for the viewing audience in complicated legalese. A replay system initially installed to correct obvious mistakes is now intruding on all major U.S. sports with time-consuming, multi-angle investigations beyond the capabilities of the naked eye.

I think you (have to take the human element) into account, Johnson added. Yeah, slow motion can show every bitty frame, but you have to also take into account what actually happened in real time, I feel like. You take it slow mo and that easy catch can turn into, ‘Dang, he bobbled it a little bit.’

Former receiver Derrick Williams started the annual game in 2010.

Since then, the torch has been passed and carried by former linebacker Stephen Tulloch, former receiver Nate Burleson, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and, now, Martin, who is entering his sixth season with the Lions.

Donald is home in Pittsburgh during the Rams’ offseason work for the second straight year, but he reported to last season’s mandatory minicamp to avoid a potential fine.

This year, Donald doesn’t appear to be concerned about losing money by missing minicamp while he strives to become one of the NFL’s highest-paid players.

The defending NFC West champion Rams haven’t indicated whether they intend to fine Donald for missing the camp, but his absence wasn’t a surprise.

The team could fine him more than $84,000 for missing this camp, but it waived much larger fines incurred by Donald last year when he skipped the entirety of training camp.

When I spoke with him last week, I said, ‘If there’s not a solution to this by next week, will you be here?’ McVay said.

Via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Browns had Mayfield working with the second team Tuesday, after he opened his first days of OTAs behind both starter Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton.

I just mixed it up, Browns coach Hue Jackson said. There’s nothing behind that. I just want to keep tinkering with that a little bit. I made a decision this week with the staff to make him second and get him some reps there and that’s just going to go as we go. There’s nothing to it, nobody should read into it. It’s an opportunity to go out there a little bit sooner than he has, that’s all.

Jackson insisted the number of reps each quarterback was getting in practice remained the same, but getting Mayfield work with a better grade of player around him can only help accelerate his education. And Jackson didn’t budge from earlier proclamations that Taylor was the starter (though all that really means is he’s the starter until Mayfield takes the job or he gives it away).

Manager Aaron Boone expected Judge would act this way.

He is absolutely unflappable, Boone said.

As for all the striking out, Boone says he’s not concerned at all.

I think that’s something that makes the chemistry and camaraderie that much better. When the older guys really care about you, it makes you want to play for them and for your teammates, and not just for yourself.Desperately wish you had a 30-minutes-or-so, daily NFL podcast in your podcast app every morning by 6 a.m.? It’s a daily dose of football to get you right for that commute or gym trip.

McClellin told ESPN.com he isn’t officially retiring, but he’s prepared to move on. McClellin noted that it’s hard for outsiders like Johnson and Brooks to weigh in on something they haven’t gone through personally.

He issued a statement that the Eagles were unable to come,as if they got stuck in Beltway traffic or something. The truth: Trump decided that turning away a small Philly contingent under the guise of patriotism serves him better with his base far more than the typical celebration.

He must have cackled with delight when he crafted the statement informing the world or at least the crew at Fox & Friends just why he decided to pull the red carpet on the Super Bowl champs.

They disagree with their President because he insists they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the great people of our country, Trump said.

Let’s start by calling that what it is a lie.

Fernando Abad given 80-game drug suspension

jets_017Pitcher Fernando Abad, an eight-year major league veteran who ended last season with Boston, has been suspended 80 games under baseball’s minor league drug program following a positive test for the steroid Stanozolol..

The Mets also said outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was scheduled to play for Binghamton of the Double-A Eastern League at Trenton on Friday night in an injury rehabilitation assignment.

The Legion of Boom ended when Sherman was released. On the same day, the team cut another familiar cornerback in Jeremy Lane, and a few days later, it parted ways with DeShawn Shead. Seattle now is set with one staring corner, second-year rising star Shaquill Griffin, who started 11 games as a rookie and played 80 percent of the defensive snaps, fifth most on the team.

The battle for the other outside job is between Byron Maxwell, Justin Coleman and Neiko Thorpe. Maxwell has experience and played well last season, but he’s 30. Coleman has good all-around attributes, but it’s hard to take him out of the nickel role he aced last season. Thorpe, who started two games for the Raiders in 2015, has worked himself into the mix after being a core special teamer.

Nicasio has a right knee effusion, a build-up of fluid around the knee joint. He is 1-3 with a 5.34 ERA, but he leads the American League with 14 holds.

Altavilla has a sprained right ulnar collateral ligament. He is 3-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 22 appearances. It’s his second trip to the DL — the last one was for an AC joint inflammation.

Nicasio and Altavilla join relievers David Phelps, who was lost for the season to Tommy John surgery; Nick Vincent, who went on the DL with a strained groin May 28; and Erasmo Ramirez, who strained his teres major, a muscle in his right rotator cuff.

The good news for the Mariners is that since May 16, their starting pitchers are 10-1 with a 2.24 ERA in 21 games. The team is 15-6 over that span. Mariners starters have gone at least eight innings in four games, at least seven in nine games and at least six in 15 games.

Cowboys’ David Irving reportedly missed OTA’s due to off-field issue

jets_018President Trump could be subpoenaed by Colin Kaepernick’s legal team in NFL collusion case, report says

You can see him thinking at a different level and just being more comfortable in our offense, and then challenging everyone else to play at that level with him, Frederick said. People gravitate to him naturally. People want to follow him. Guys are looking to him for that, and he’s accepting of that, and he knows his responsibility.

Luckily for Prescott, he can still turn around and hand the ball to Ezekiel Elliott, who should be availed for Dallas the entire season after a tumultuous 2017.

The tight end position battle is a bit more murky, but Frederick pointed out offensive cohesion starts with quarterback and new unquestioned team leader Dak Prescott.

Corbin was solid his previous outing, holding the San Francisco Giants to a run on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander wasn’t as sharp against the Pirates.

He gave up an unearned run in the first inning to the Pirates on first baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s fielding error and four more in the fifth on two-run hits Austin Meadows and Starling Marte had two-run hits.

Yankees: CC Sabathia (3-1, 3.59 ERA) starts Tuesday night when Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals visit Yankee Stadium for the opener of a two-game interleague series.

Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (2-4, 4.57 ERA) gets the ball Tuesday in a personal homecoming at Atlanta. Wheeler, who tossed seven shutout innings of three-hit ball last time out against Baltimore, is 4-2 with a 2.94 ERA in eight career starts vs. the Braves though he hasn’t faced them since September 2014.Muncy homers in 3rd straight game, Dodgers beat Braves 7-2

Matt Kemp takes a called strike two, but home plate umpire Bill Miller loses track of the count and emphatically punches him out.

With every swing, Max Muncy becomes more valuable to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
